After two weeks of cup action, BGFC were back to league matters with a home tie against their last league oppononets, Wilderpark Reserves.
But long before the game started, it needed to be given a chance to start at all. So a mention must go to Jon, Kevin and Darren for going to the ground early on Saturday to start to replace and work on the tyre marks still very visible, and to clear the 25 tonnes of leaves on the far end corners. A special mention and thank you also goes to Mick Slade, who also gave up his Saturday morning to help with the pitch, even though their was a chance he may not feature in the game. Top effort.
The game. Green were looking to avenge the 2-0 defeat last time out but had a few key players missing. Nonetheless, Green were still able to field a strong side.
Fennings. Sexton, De-Kisshazy, Wood, Higgins. NitschB, Rayfield, Brooker, Hopper. Knight, Young. Subs were CookD, Law, Slade and Batchelor.
Despite defending the slope, Green got off to a positive start and immediately started to pass the ball well and get the momentum. Aaron Hopper was a constant threat down Green’s right flank and caused some issues for the WP back line.
WP also had chances of their own and started to get the upper hand about midway through the half. Both sides were now looking to get ahead and it was WP who did strike first.
A long throw into Green’s 6 yard box wasn’t cleared properly and the high ball was met first by the WP forward who nodded in from close range. It was a blow for Green who had so far defended resolutely.
Green were now finding it hard to create chances and at times were too eager to play the killer pass, only to result in losing possession.
At the break Green were frustrated but looked to put pressure on WP by using the famous Wrotham slope in the second half.
Green did up their game in the second half and forwards Dan Knight and Paul Young were seeing more of the ball, ably supported by the midfield. Defensively Green didnt look too bad and centre halves Pete De-Kisshazy and Chris Wood easily had the measure of the WP forwards.
With the introduction of Sam Nitsch and Mick Slade, Green pressed and pressed and it looked increasing like it wasnt going to be their day. A flurry of corners were tantalisingly close with goal line blocks and the uprights the only thing from a deserved equaliser.
WP rarely threatened and even though Green went 3 up front, it just wasnt to be, and the final result of a 1-0 defeat was a tough pill to swallow.
MOTM? Paul Young didnt disgrace himself up front and had a surprising spring in his step. At the heart of the defence, Pete De-Kisshazy and Chris Wood did very well together considering they have never played as a pairing before. MOTM this week goes to Chris Wood. Played a decent game and listened to the instructions he was given and marked their main threat out of the game in the second half.
